How will I respond?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fasting:<\/strong> What can I deny myself today (food, drink, behaviors) as an act of worship?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Charity:<\/strong> How can I help someone in need today with my time, money, or goods?<\/li><\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Closing Prayer: Psalm 48<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>1&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>Great is the&nbsp;Lord,&nbsp;and most worthy of praise,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;in the city of our God,&nbsp;his holy mountain.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>Beautiful&nbsp;in its loftiness,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;the joy of the whole earth,<br>like the heights of Zaphon<sup>[<\/sup><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=psalm%2048&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-14637b\"><em><sup>b<\/sup><\/em><\/a><em><sup>]<\/sup><\/em><em>&nbsp;is Mount Zion,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;the city of the Great King.<br><strong><sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>God is in her citadels;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;he has shown himself to be her fortress.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>When the kings joined forces,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;when they advanced together,<br><strong><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>they saw her and were astounded;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;they fled in terror.<br><strong><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Trembling seized&nbsp;them there,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;pain like that of a woman in labor.<br><strong><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;shattered by an east wind.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>As we have heard,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;so we have seen<br>in the city of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;Almighty,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;in the city of our God:<br>God makes her secure<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;forever.<sup>[<\/sup><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=psalm%2048&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-14643c\"><em><sup>c<\/sup><\/em><\/a><em><sup>]<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>Within your temple, O God,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;we meditate&nbsp;on your unfailing love.<br><strong><sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Like your name,&nbsp;O God,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;your right hand is filled with righteousness.<br><strong><sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Mount Zion rejoices,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;the villages of Judah are glad<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;because of your judgments.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>Walk about Zion, go around her,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;count her towers,<br><strong><sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>consider well her ramparts,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;view her citadels,<br>that you may tell of them<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;to the next generation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>For this God is our God for ever and ever;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;he will be our guide&nbsp;even to the end<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>How to Use this Devotional<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Read the \u201cOpening Prayer\u201d from scripture to the Lord as your prayer<\/li>\n<li>Choose one or more of the scripture passages under \u201cGod\u2019s Voice\u201d for further reading<\/li>\n<li>Answer the questions under \u201cPursuing Holiness\u201d\n<ol>\n<li>Your reflection on the scriptures and how you sense the Holy Spirit leading you today<\/li>\n<li>Identify how you will practice self-denial today based on God\u2019s leading<\/li>\n<li>Identify how you want to practice giving today<\/li>\n<li>prayer, fasting (self-denial), and giving be your living, spiritual worship<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Keep notes in a journal or planner to enable your follow-through and create a record<\/li>\n<li>Read the \u201cClosing Prayer\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Since the third century, Christians have used Scripture, Prayer, Self-denial, and Almsgiving as spiritual preparation for Easter<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\"><em><u>What is Lent?<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lent &nbsp;is the season in the Christian calendar that leads up to Easter. Lent is 40 days long because Jesus was tempted in the wilderness for 40 days before his public ministry. The Israelites, because of their disobedience and rebellion, were made to wander for 40 years in the wilderness before arriving in the promised land. Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai engaged with God in receiving the Ten Commandments. In the Bible, the number 40 is often used to indicate a period of preparation and testing.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In the wilderness, nothing is hidden. We are laid bare to God. We do not have our creature comforts. We are separated from common distractions. We ultimately will return to our lives when the time of preparation is complete.
