How will I respond?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fasting:<\/strong> What can I deny myself today (food, drink, behaviors) as an act of worship?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Charity:<\/strong> How can I help someone in need today with my time, money, or goods?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><br><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Closing Prayer: Psalm 62<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>1&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>Truly my soul finds rest&nbsp;in God;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;my salvation comes from him.<br><strong><sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Truly he is my rock&nbsp;and my salvation;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;he is my fortress,&nbsp;I will never be shaken.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>How long will you assault me?<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Would all of you throw me down\u2014<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;this leaning wall,&nbsp;this tottering fence?<br><strong><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Surely they intend to topple me<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;from my lofty place;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;they take delight in lies.<br>With their mouths they bless,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;but in their hearts they curse.<sup>[<\/sup><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%2062&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-14832b\"><em><sup>b<\/sup><\/em><\/a><em><sup>]<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>Yes, my soul, find rest in God;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;my hope comes from him.<br><strong><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Truly he is my rock and my salvation;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.<br><strong><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>My salvation and my honor depend on God<sup>[<\/sup><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%2062&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-14835c\"><em><sup>c<\/sup><\/em><\/a><em><sup>]<\/sup><\/em><em>;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;he is my mighty rock, my refuge.<br><strong><sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Trust in him at all times, you people;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;pour out your hearts to him,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;for God is our refuge.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>Surely the lowborn&nbsp;are but a breath,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;the highborn are but a lie.<br>If weighed on a balance,&nbsp;they are nothing;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;together they are only a breath.<br><strong><sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Do not trust in extortion<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or put vain hope in stolen goods;<br>though your riches increase,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;do not set your heart on them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>One thing God has spoken,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;two things I have heard:<br>\u201cPower belongs to you, God,<br><strong><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and with you, Lord, is unfailing love\u201d;<br>and, \u201cYou reward everyone<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;according to what they have done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>How do I use this Devotional?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Read the \u201cOpening Prayer\u201d from scripture to the Lord as your prayer<\/li>\n<li>Choose one or more of the scripture passages under \u201cGod\u2019s Voice\u201d for further reading<\/li>\n<li>Answer the questions under \u201cPursuing Holiness\u201d\n<ol>\n<li>Your reflection on the scriptures and how you sense the Holy Spirit leading you today<\/li>\n<li>Identify how you will practice self-denial today based on God\u2019s leading<\/li>\n<li>Identify how you want to practice giving today<\/li>\n<li>prayer, fasting (self-denial), and giving be your living, spiritual worship<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Keep notes in a journal or planner to enable your follow-through and create a record<\/li>\n<li>Read the \u201cClosing Prayer\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since the third century, Christians have used <u>Scripture<\/u>, <u>Prayer<\/u>, <u>Self-denial<\/u>, and <u>Almsgiving<\/u> as spiritual preparation for Easter.<\/p>\n<p><br><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>What is Lent?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lent &nbsp;is the season in the Christian calendar that leads up to Easter. Lent is 40 days long because Jesus was tempted in the wilderness for 40 days before his public ministry. The Israelites, because of their disobedience and rebellion, were made to wander for 40 years in the wilderness before arriving in the promised land. Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai engaged with God in receiving the Ten Commandments. In the Bible, the number 40 is often used to indicate a period of preparation and testing.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In the wilderness, nothing is hidden. We are laid bare to God. We do not have our creature comforts. We are separated from common distractions. We ultimately will return to our lives when the time of preparation is complete.
