How will I respond?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fasting:<\/strong> What can I deny myself today (food, drink, behaviors) as an act of worship?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Charity:<\/strong> How can I help someone in need today with my time, money, or goods?<\/li><\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Closing Prayer: Psalm 132<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>1&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>Lord, remember David<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and all his self-denial.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>He swore an oath to the&nbsp;Lord,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:<br><strong><sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>\u201cI will not enter my house<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or go to my bed,<br><strong><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>I will allow no sleep to my eyes<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or slumber to my eyelids,<br><strong><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>till I find a place&nbsp;for the&nbsp;Lord,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>We heard it in Ephrathah,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;we came upon it in the fields of Jaar:<sup>[<\/sup><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalms%20132&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-16158a\"><em><sup>a<\/sup><\/em><\/a><em><sup>]<\/sup><\/em><em><br><strong><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>\u201cLet us go to his dwelling place,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;let us worship at his footstool,&nbsp;saying,<br><strong><sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>\u2018Arise,&nbsp;Lord,&nbsp;and come to your resting place,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;you and the ark of your might.<br><strong><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>May your priests be clothed with your righteousness;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;may your faithful people&nbsp;sing for joy.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>For the sake of your servant David,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;do not reject your anointed one.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>The&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;swore an oath to David,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;a sure oath he will not revoke:<br>\u201cOne of your own descendants<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I will place on your throne.<br><strong><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>If your sons keep my covenant<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and the statutes I teach them,<br>then their sons will sit<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;on your throne&nbsp;for ever and ever.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>For the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;has chosen Zion,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;he has desired it for his dwelling,&nbsp;saying,<br><strong><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>\u201cThis is my resting place for ever and ever;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;here I will sit enthroned,&nbsp;for I have desired it.<br><strong><sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>I will bless her with abundant provisions;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;her poor I will satisfy with food.<br><strong><sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>I will clothe her priests&nbsp;with salvation,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and her faithful people will ever sing for joy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>\u201cHere I will make a horn<sup>[<\/sup><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalms%20132&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-16169b\"><em><sup>b<\/sup><\/em><\/a><em><sup>]<\/sup><\/em><em>&nbsp;grow&nbsp;for David<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and set up a lamp&nbsp;for my anointed one.<br><strong><sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>I will clothe his enemies with shame,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><br><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>How to Use this Devotional<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Read the \u201cOpening Prayer\u201d from scripture to the Lord as your prayer<\/li>\n<li>Choose one or more of the scripture passages under \u201cGod\u2019s Voice\u201d for further reading<\/li>\n<li>Answer the questions under \u201cPursuing Holiness\u201d\n<ol>\n<li>Your reflection on the scriptures and how you sense the Holy Spirit leading you today<\/li>\n<li>Identify how you will practice self-denial today based on God\u2019s leading<\/li>\n<li>Identify how you want to practice giving today<\/li>\n<li>Let prayer, fasting (self-denial), and giving be your living, spiritual worship<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Keep notes in a journal or planner to enable your follow-through and create a record<\/li>\n<li>Read the \u201cClosing Prayer\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since the third century, Christians have used <u>Scripture<\/u>, <u>Prayer<\/u>, Fasting (<u>Self-denial)<\/u>, and Charity (<u>Almsgiving)<\/u> as spiritual preparation for Easter.<\/p>\n<p><br><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>What is Lent?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lent &nbsp;is the season in the Christian calendar that leads up to Easter. Lent is 40 days long because Jesus was tempted in the wilderness for 40 days before his public ministry. The Israelites, because of their disobedience and rebellion, were made to wander for 40 years in the wilderness before arriving in the promised land. Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai engaged with God in receiving the Ten Commandments. In the Bible, the number 40 is often used to indicate a period of preparation and testing.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In the wilderness, nothing is hidden. We are laid bare to God. We do not have our creature comforts. We are separated from common distractions. We ultimately return to our lives when the time of preparation is complete.
