Love – A Promise Fulfilled

2 Samuel 7:1-11, 18; Psalm 89; Luke 1:26-38

Through advent we see the love of God expressed in the person of His son. A coming that was promised but was fulfilled in a way that initially only a few would recognize. This Messiah was born to a humble servant in an obscure part of the kingdom, with only a selected group of shepherds to hear the proclamation that love had indeed come in the flesh to redeem us all. In the lectionary reading for today, we see the promise of a messiah given to David. Through these scriptures we see the promise given, celebrated, and fulfilled.

In 2 Samuel, chapter 7, we see the Lord’s covenant promise to David delivered by His prophet, Nathan. After reminding David that he had been called, anointed, protected, and delivered, God reveals that through David’s royal line, God would provide for One who would secure the royal throne forever – a promise given.

Psalm 89 begins with David’s proclamation: “I will sing of the Lord’s unfailing love forever!” Quickly he moves to remembering the covenant of a kingdom and throne that will last for eternity – a promise celebrated.

In the first chapter of Luke, the angel Gabriel tells Mary about this child she will conceive, telling her that He will reign over Israel forever – declaring “His Kingdom will never end”.  Finally, the Apostle Paul declares, “But now as the prophets foretold and as the eternal God has commanded, this message is made known to all Gentiles everywhere, so that they too might believe and obey him.” – a promise fulfilled!

This promise was provided through a love that reaches to anyone who would believe in this Messiah. This eternal King who not only reigns in the heavenlies but in the hearts of those who receive Him.

Today, remember that God’s promise is to be celebrated as He continues the indwelling work of love imparted to you through Christ who will reign forever… just as God promised.
