Psalm 124

If the Lord had not been on our side—
    let Israel say—
if the Lord had not been on our side
    when people attacked us,
they would have swallowed us alive
    when their anger flared against us;
the flood would have engulfed us,
    the torrent would have swept over us,
the raging waters
    would have swept us away.

Praise be to the Lord,
    who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
We have escaped like a bird
    from the fowler’s snare;
the snare has been broken,
    and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.

DEVOTIONAL

There was a gap of about 400-1,000 years between when Psalm 124 was written and when Matthew wrote one of the accounts of Jesus’s birth.

It does not matter what time frame one is living in, God’s hands are always powerfully delivering and protecting His children from the enemy.  The Psalmist uses very dramatic metaphors to convey a very powerful message.  Our lives are never the same without God in it!

Psalm 46:1 says “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (KJV). He is our safe place. The Psalmist praised God for His deliverance and so can we. It does not matter what day and age we are living; there are serious consequences for a life without God.

It is an act of obedience and faith to fully put our trust in Him, His will, His way, and His timing. God sent His one and only Son to deliver us from hell and damnation. He came to do that in human form–like us! He delivered His people then, before then, and ever since. Why would we think for one second that He is going to stop now?

New Song

This Christmas morning, we might need to remember that the God who was faithful still is-—-and is still—doing amazing things. Celebrate today by remembering the past—Christ is born—and by singing the new song that one day Christ will return. You might even find that it becomes your new favorite.

Happiness

God gave us Jesus not because we were good, but because we needed help. God saw our emptiness and offered us salvation with incredible generosity.

Psalm 42

I have been thirsty–long hikes, limited water, and miles before the next source. I read the map, looking for the blue water drops printed next to the known sources of water.

Jude 1:17-25

Advent keeps us mindful that we are a people of waiting. This season mirrors the time God’s people endured waiting for the promise of redemption and reconciliation to be fulfilled. We wait, but we do not wait passively.
